What I've learned about transformation design thus far #49
Breakthrough, the moment when something shifts fundamentally, does not happen randomly. Certain conditions make it more likely.
Readiness is perhaps most important. The person must be ripe for change, not necessarily consciously seeking it, but inwardly prepared. There is a moment when the old structure has become unstable, when the defences have loosened, when something is ready to give way. Breakthrough finds this moment, or the moment finds breakthrough.
Pressure plays a role. Not overwhelming pressure that leads to collapse, but productive pressure that creates the conditions for release. The tension that has built, the question that has nagged, the problem that has resisted, these create pressure that breakthrough resolves. Without some pressure, there is no impetus for change.
Safety seems paradoxical but is essential. The psychological safety to let go, to allow the old structure to collapse, to enter the uncertainty of transformation. If the system feels too threatened, it will defend rather than transform. Breakthrough requires enough safety to risk breaking.
