Education and therapy have spent decades refining their understanding of how people change. Hospitality would do well to learn from them.

From education, we learn that transformation requires active engagement. The lecture poured into passive students produces little lasting change. But the seminar that demands participation, the project that requires creation, the challenge that necessitates struggle; these change people. The same principle applies in hospitality: the guest who is merely served remains unchanged; the guest who is invited into active participation has the opportunity to become.
