The loss of traditional initiation doesn’t need to be permanent. New forms are emerging, adapted to contemporary conditions.

Some of these forms are explicit attempts to revive initiatory practice. ‘The Journey’ at Embercombe offers a threshold experience that disrupts identity, to allow re-authoring. ‘The Walking Mentorship’ pilgrimages, in collaboration with ‘The Transformational Travel Council’, offer structured journeys of self-discovery. The ‘School of Lost Borders’ is one of the pioneers of the modern vision fast, guiding people through structured wilderness rites of passage rooted in ancient traditions, but framed for contemporary life. ‘The Animas Valley Institute’ guides people through immersive wilderness programs designed to help them discover their unique “soul gift”, and bring it back in service of community and planet.
