A society without initiation produces mature but psychologically ‘unfinished’ adults.
I don’t mean this as a moral judgment but as a description. The uninitiated adult has not undergone the structured death-and-rebirth that traditional initiation provided. The old identity, the child’s identity, was never properly dissolved. The new identity, the adult’s identity, was never properly conferred. Something is missing, and we know it, even if we can’t name what.
