What I've learned about transformation design thus far #46
A good read is Chip and Dan Heath’s book The Power of Moments. They’ve analysed what makes certain experiences memorable and transformative. They identified four elements, forming the acronym EPIC.
Elevation refers to experiences that rise above the everyday, moments of heightened sensory or emotional engagement, transcendence of the ordinary. The surprise, the delight, the peak that breaks through the flatness of routine. Elevation creates the intensity that makes moments memorable.
Pride refers to experiences that capture achievement, courage, or growth; moments when we recognise ourselves as capable of more than we thought. The accomplishment that required stretch, the fear that was faced, the goal that was reached. Pride writes new evidence into the story of who we are.
Insight refers to experiences that deliver realisation: moments when understanding shifts, when something becomes clear that was previously obscure. The reframe that changes everything, the pattern finally recognised, the truth finally admitted. Insight restructures meaning.
Connection refers to experiences that deepen bonds with others; moments of shared vulnerability, collective achievement, or profound understanding between people. The conversation that breaks through to honesty, the team that becomes a unit, the relationship that transforms through crisis shared.
