What I've learned about transformation design thus far #75

A journey begins before the traveler moves.

This is easily forgotten. We tend to think of experiences as bounded events, starting when you arrive, and ending when you leave. But transformation follows a different logic. The shift begins the moment attention turns toward the possibility. The anticipation, the decision, the preparation; these are not preliminary to the experience. They are its first chapter.

Consider what happens when someone books a retreat. From that moment, something changes. The future now contains a promise. The calendar holds a marker. And the mind begins to orbit around what is coming. This anticipation is active preparation, conscious or not. The psyche begins to ready itself for what has been chosen.

Transformation designers who ignore this phase waste an opportunity. The weeks between booking and arrival can be designed. Not to be filled with administrative emails and logistics, but seeded with intention, with reflection, with material that begins the work before the guest walks through the door.

The guest who arrives already oriented and reflecting in the process is further along than the one who arrives cold. The first chapter has already been written. The threshold crossing at arrival becomes the second chapter, not the first.
