In storytelling, the inciting incident is the event that kick-starts the story. Before it, the protagonist lives in the ordinary world. After it, they are on their adventure.

Arrival is hospitality’s inciting incident. Before arrival, the guest lives their ordinary life. Arrival is the moment when something changes, when the special world receives them, when their journey begins.

This moment deserves narrative weight. The inciting incident in a film is charged with significance, often with emotion, always with the sense that something is beginning.

How might arrival in hospitality carry this weight? Through sensory impact; the first breath of different air, hard floors giving way to sand or stone underfoot. Through ritual, actions that mark the crossing: the journey washed from your hands or feet, a gong or a conch sounding the threshold. Through human encounter; a welcome that meets you as a person, with a poem, not a reservation number, the meeting with a personal concierge, host. And the strongest arrivals are sequenced, not single: each step sheds a little more of the ordinary world.

The inciting incident sets the tone for everything that follows. A powerful inciting incident in film creates momentum that carries through. The same is true of arrival in experiences. The guest who arrives into narrative significance enters the experience differently from the guest who arrives into administrative process.
