If transcendence sits above self-actualisation, then the entire framework shifts.
The conventional reading of Maslow’s hierarchy is developmental: you satisfy lower needs before higher ones become salient. First survival, then safety, then belonging, then esteem, then self-actualisation. This reading has been criticised: people do sometimes sacrifice lower needs for higher ones, but it captures something true about how human motivation typically operates.
