What I've learned about transformation design thus far #44

The distinction between creating conditions and guaranteeing outcomes is central to transformation design.

Conditions are what the designer controls: the space, the sequence, the invitation, the container. Outcomes emerge within those conditions, shaped by factors beyond design: the guest’s readiness, their history, their willingness, and the mysterious alchemy of timing and circumstance.

A well-designed retreat creates conditions for transformation. Some participants will be transformed; others will not. This is not failure. It is the nature of what is being designed. The designer can improve conditions, refine the container, and deepen the invitation. They cannot make the transformation happen.
