What I've learned about transformation design thus far #41
Not all peak experiences are equal in their lasting impact. Some fade quickly, leaving pleasant memories but no permanent change. Others echo forward through years, decades, or an entire life. Reference points against which everything else is measured.
What makes the difference?
Intensity matters, but it is not sufficient. An experience can be intensely pleasant without being transformative. What seems crucial is significance, the sense that what happened mattered, that it revealed something true, that it connected to the deepest concerns of one’s life.
Integration also matters. The peak that is processed, reflected upon, and incorporated into one’s self-understanding has more lasting impact than the peak that is simply enjoyed and then forgotten. This is why traditions emphasise integration practices: journaling after retreat, spiritual direction, therapy, and conversation with trusted others. The peak is raw material; integration shapes it into lasting change.
