What I've learned about transformation design thus far #19
The hospitality industry loves standardization. The brand promises consistency: the same quality, the same service, the same experience in every location. This consistency builds trust. Guests know what to expect.
But what transforms one person leaves another unchanged. The same retreat that unlocks profound insight in one participant may feel hollow to another. The environment is identical; the inner experience is utterly different.
This is because transformation depends not just on what is offered but on what is received, and reception depends on the unique history, psychology, and readiness of each individual. The guest who arrives in crisis may find even modest support transformative. The guest who arrives guarded may resist even the most powerful invitation.
Transformation design must work with variability rather than against it. Instead of designing experiences that guarantee transformation, designers create conditions that enable diverse individuals to transform. Instead of standardizing outcomes, they diversify offerings, allowing different guests to find different pathways.
