The need for growth is a drive, wired into the organism.
Developmental psychologists have long recognized this. Piaget described children as natural learners, driven to understand their world not by external reward but by intrinsic motivation. Vygotsky identified the “zone of proximal development”, the sweet spot where challenge meets capacity, as the place where growth occurs. More recent research confirms that humans actively seek out complexity, novelty, and challenge, even when simpler options are available.
