What I've learned about transformation design thus far #6

Here’s what I come to believe is the central puzzle of transformation: it requires both effort and effortlessness, both intention and release, both striving and surrender.

Too much striving and transformation becomes forced, mechanical, another achievement of the ego. Too much surrender yields nothing; passivity masquerading as receptivity. The balance is delicate, and it shifts constantly. Sometimes the work is to try harder; sometimes the work is to stop trying altogether.

It is a relationship between the “ego” and “being.” The ego sets direction, makes effort, and perseveres. However, the ego cannot transform itself. Something deeper must be touched, something that the ego does not control. The ego’s task is to create conditions, through practice, through attention, and showing up; and then to step aside, to allow something else to work.

This has design implications. A transformative environment must invite both effort and release. It must offer challenges that engage the guest’s active participation and spaciousness that allows for surrender. It must structure experience without over-determining it. Hold intention without grasping outcomes.
